In Case You Missed It:Covered in The Colors of You: The Music of Netflix' Heartstopper

Written by Michael Swartz

Netflix

You would have to be living under a rock lately if you haven’t heard of the new Netflix series “Heartstopper” which was released in April 2022. Now you are probably thinking this is a music blog, why are they posting about a tv show? Well my friends, that is a very good question. We at The Spider are VERY LGBT friendly, so when I heard about this show I flocked to it. The Series based on the popular web toon/graphic novel by the talented Alice Oseman was an instant hit. It follows the story of teens Nick and Charlie played by Kit Connor, and Joe Locke respectively. The show follows these two as they not only find a wonderful friendship and eventually find something they never expected. “Boy Meets Boy, Boys Become Friends, Boys Fall in Love”/ Again you are probably still asking why am I talking about this show, it’s because of the music. As per usual Netflix has curated an AMAZING soundtrack, some of which originally hails from a playlist created for the webtoon itself. Because of this show I have discovered so many incredible artists that I cannot wait to share with you. So before I say anything else I wanna say if you have not seen the show or read the books you absolutely must!!!! The show can be found on netflix, while the webtoon/novel can be found on the tapas app, and wherever books are sold.

The music in this show is top notch, I cannot begin to explain how perfectly selected these songs are. If it’s one thing Netflix gets right, it’s music. Thankfully in this case they got everything right from the actors to the adaptation of the books, which was done beautifully by the story’s author. She stayed faithful to the source material, and the attention to detail is absolutely insane! As you read the books you will notice tiny little details that made it into the show. Now I don’t want to keep going on about the show, but it is hard not to as it is that good however you will have to watch to see for yourself.

This is probably one of the best soundtracks Netflix has put out, the songs all help bring this story to life. The highlight of this soundtrack is definitely Baby Queen, as she appears on it several times, and is heavily involved with the show and cast, Baby Queen is Heartstopper, her music runs through the veins of this show, and I personally hope she continues to be involved with the show. With such bangers as “Want Me’, “Buzz Kill’, and “Colors of you”, which she wrote for the show it’s hard not to see her continued involvement.

It is extremely obvious that whoever curated this playlist had massive passion for this project, as these songs, and their timing of where they play in the show are just flawless.I personally would love to go into details on song placement and how well they work in each scene, but I do not want to spoil the series for anyone who has not seen it, because if i get too descriptive it could give details away. However if you do not wish to watch the show, and you still want some amazing tracks please give them a list. The songs alone tell an amazing narrative of young love, fitting in, heartbreak, friendship, and finding oneself. Linked below are the official spotify playlists connected to show, curated by netflix, as well as an apple music playlist I put together based on the playlist from the books. Happy Listening!
